What your puppy actually needs from you
It has nothing to do with perfection, and everything to do with you. We put together a short, printable guide to the five things that matter most in these first months together — read it below, or take it with you.
Be Predictable
Your puppy needs you to be consistent enough that they know what to expect. Routines, clear boundaries, and follow-through help them feel safe.
Be Calm
Your nervous system regulates theirs. When you stay calm, your puppy feels calmer, safer, and more confident — whether you show it or not.
Be Present
Not on your phone, not half paying attention. Actually there with them, even for just five minutes. Quality time builds trust and a stronger bond.
Find Them Interesting
Puppies who feel genuinely interesting to their person try harder, connect faster, and trust more deeply. Notice them, engage with them, and celebrate who they are.
Be Their Person
Your puppy does not need you to be a perfect trainer. They do not need you to have all the answers or never make a mistake. They need you to show up for them, consistently, and everything else builds from that.
They’re figuring out you
“Who are you? Are you safe? Are you predictable? Are you someone worth paying attention to?”
Those are the questions your puppy is asking every single day, and the answers they find will determine how easy or how hard everything else becomes after that.
They’re Figuring Out YouYour puppy doesn’t need a perfect you. They just need you.
Print it, save it, put it on the fridge — whatever helps you come back to it during the puppy-crazies weeks. It’s the same approach we build into every Hawaii Goldens puppy from day one.
